The workshop “What is graffiti?” that took place on the 4th and 5th of september at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, showed that there is an interest in researching this topic. The workshop tried to explore this area with an interdisciplinary approach using philosphical, art-historical, media-theoretical and sociological concepts.
In terms with the tradition of Bauhaus and in collaboration with the Bauhaus Lab the theoretical workshop is aimed to be extended with a pratical one. In this way we try to reach the fusion of theory and practice. While the theoretical workshop tried to research the multilayer phenomenon graffiti using an interdisciplinary approach the practical workshop will use this multilayered way to show that graffiti is also a transmedia phenomenon. Not only tags and pieces, stylewriting and whole cars determine this phenomenon, we will try to extend it with street art like Pochoir, poster works and collages, with video installations, performances and music.
On the 26th and 27th of september this idea will be realized and documented in Weimar, to combine the theoretical and practical parts afterwards in one publication.
